Zone CLVの説明

Challenge to develop of the fastest drive in the world
SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. has developed high speed recording technology for CD-R/RW and BURN-Proof recording technology, and manufactures CD-R/RW drives. We have achieved the impressive 24X speed recording in the newly developed CRD-BP1500P drive and CRD-BP5 drive which are equipped with a Zone CLV (Constant Liner Velocity) recording method to reduce stress on the mechanism and motor. In addition to that, we have developed 「FlexSS-BP」 which automatically selects the optimum recording speed for each disc, because some CDs cannot stand high speed recording with a high recording power.

The graph below shows the comparison of recording time between the CRD-BP1400P with 16X CLV method and CRD-BP1500P with 24X Zone CLV method. The average recording speed of CRD-BP1500P is approximately 22X speed.

We will explain these two technologies (Zone CLV and FlexSS-BP) for high speed recording.

What is Zone CLV ?

It is a recording method which records data with a certain constant speed (Constant Linear Velocity) for each zone which is partitioned from inner area to outer area on a disc.

CD(-R/RW) employs a Constant Linear Velocity (= Constant recording density) recording method (CLV) in order to store much more data and music information on a disc.

The rotation speed of a disc will be approximately 500 rpm at standard recording speed and approximately 8000 rpm at 16X recording speed. One of the concerns of high-speed recording by CLV technology was that it would lead to high material cost in order to prevent vibration and so produce an extremely high quality disc. On the one hand, over 16X high-speed recording technology has been realized by constantly advancing development of high-speed semiconductors and more high power lasers. We have realized high-speed recording at CRD-BP1500P and CRD-BP5 by using a Zone CLV recording method that utilizes the current development property of CD-R.
Zone CLVのグラフAs the figure shows, the recording speed at the inner area on a disc (Zone 1) is 16X and the recording speed at the outer area on a disc (Zone 2), after t1 time, is 20X. In addition, a recording speed at Zone 3 after t2 time is 24X. Even though the speed at outer area on a disc is 24X, rotation speed does not exceed 8000 rpm.

We apply BURN-Proof technology to switch the recording speed at the t1 and t2 time. BURN-Proof is the first technology in the world which enables you to freely stop and restart recording CD's.

  1. A drive records data with 16X speed from the recording start position to t1 time position.
  2. After a drive changes the recording speed setting from 16 (20)X to 20 (24)X, it accesses the recorded area.
  3. Then, after the drive has read and synchronized data, it restarts recording data from the t1 (t2) position with 20 (24) X speed.
NB: We achieved zero gaps at CRD-BP1400P and CRD-BP4 for seamless additional recording.

A CLV recording is employed at zones that require stable recording quality because a high precision recording control is available, using power and recording wave-form controls (Strategy). In addition, 24X speed recording capability has made recording time shorter.

What is FlexSS-BP ?

A FlexSS-BP is a generic name for Flexible Speed and Flexible Strategy.

What is Flexible Speed ?
When a drive determines that it is barely tracing the placed disc correctly because of the variation between discs, and it determines that the placed disc cannot stand a high power laser at high speed recording, the drive selects a suitable recording speed for the disc and continues to record. (Variation between discs can be caused by serpentine tracks and off centered discs.)
Thus a drive can monitor the physical condition of disc in real time while recording, and flexibly switch recording speeds in order to maintain the optimum recording condition.

What is Flexible Strategy ?
Media and recording speeds at CD-R recording are closely associated with recording powers. Even though CD-R technology is over ten years old, CD-R/RW drives perform an OPC, which is test-recording to determine the recording power, and a ROPC, which optimizes the recording power while recording before they start to record. A Flexible Strategy measures and evaluates the recording condition of recorded area at switching zones. Previously, the recording condition could not be checked until the recording was completed, but a Flexible Strategy can restart the recording after the check of pit conditions at the recording stop position and the parameter optimization.

FlexSS-BP recording process

We have developed Flexible Speed and Flexible Strategy as a result of our goal, to develop useful technology and features for users as well as the world's fastest recording drive. BURN-Proof has an important part to play in monitoring the recording signals in real time and the realization of a flexible recording system, according to the disc condition during recording.
BURN-Proof technology, which avoids Buffer Under Run Errors has evolved as a FlexSS-BP which enables you to record data more flexibly.
